Three states allow gay marriage. First was Mass., second was California, then there was Connecticut.
Many good lefties are aware of the heated battle over Prop 8, gay marriage in California, but many aren't away of what is happening in Connecticut with Question 1.
Since we've seen that the religious right will stop at nothing to continue marriage discrimination one should assume that they will attack Gay Marriage in CT or Mass. next..well, they already are.
A partnership of political and religious groups have formed the "Connecticut Constitutional Convention Campaign". The CCCC is supported by Republican Gov Jodi Rell, The Family Institute of Connecticut, the National Taxpayers Union, Federation of Connecticut Taxpayer Org., The Green Party of CT, and the CT Catholic Conference. These groups are not hiding what they're motive is (i know, ct green party) and by reading they're names I'm sure it'll make sense to you too. A constitutional convention supported by Taxpayer Orgs., Religious Orgs., and Republicans slowly losing any grip of control in this dark blue Constitution State.
For once we have a chance to stop marriage discrimination by cutting it off at the pass as well as protect taxation in CT.
More of my first Diary after the jump.
First, let me quote a story by the New York Times about Question 1 on the ballot this Nov 4th.
The Connecticut Supreme Court’s decision last week to legalize gay marriage is prompting its own backlash. In November, Connecticut voters will weigh in on a ballot question asking whether they want a state constitutional convention. The question is put to Connecticut voters every 20 years.
Opponents of gay marriage are now rushing to support the ballot question. If it wins, and there is a state constitutional convention, they will be able to push for the adoption of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
Last week, the state’s Roman Catholic bishops called on Catholics to vote "yes" on the Nov. 4 ballot initiative, after saying they were disappointed in the court’s ruling. That is no small thing in Connecticut. According to a 2004 Gallup poll, 46 percent of the state’s residents are Catholic, making it one of the most Catholic states in the union.
Now let's take a look at some of the views of these Organizations supporting "yes" on Question 1.
There's CT Constitutional Convention Campaign (CCCC, or CTConCon) They're mission states:
- Inform and educate as many voters as possible that there will be a ballot question "Shall there be a Constitutional Convention to amend or revise the Constitution of the state".
- Convince those voters that it is extremely important for them to Vote yes.
- Convince legislators to put together a fair, bi-partisan list of participants to convene in the state Constitution Convention.
- Convince delegation to submit a proposal to the people of Connecticut that We amend our state Constitution for a 31st time by implementing Initiative Referenda as a mechanism to be utilized by the people of Connecticut.
Then there is the Family Institute of CT. They're involvement with CTConCon states their mission to be:
Help Us Oppose Judicial Tyranny!
Last Friday four judges on Connecticut's Supreme Court undemocratically forced same-sex "marriage" on our state. Our best—very likely our only—chance to restore marriage and self-government in Connecticut is for the majority of state voters to vote "Yes" on Question 1 on Election Day (Nov. 4th) to have a constitutional convention.
FIC will fight hard for that "Yes" vote these next three weeks and we know we can win if we have your help. As we begin the final push to restore democracy in our state, let us keep in mind a few key points in the wake of this outrageous act of judicial tyranny:
Last week's "victory" for same-sex "marriage" is illegitimate. The claims falsely made against President Bush's election in 2000 are entirely true in the case of same-sex "marriage" in Connecticut: our opponents' "victory" is illegitimate; it was stolen from us; they "won" dirty. Connecticut will now be one of only three states in the nation to have same-sex "marriage" and in each state it arrived the same way: a sharply divided state court undemocratically forced it on the people. In no state has same-sex "marriage" been passed democratically.
Now if you thought this alliance wasn't scary enough wait till you read the mission statement of the National Taxpayers Union or NTU:
Since it was founded over 35 years ago, the National Taxpayers Union's Number One job has been helping to protect every single American's right to keep what they've earned. Our guiding principle has always been: "This is your money and the government should return it to you." We are a nonprofit, non-partisan citizen group whose members work every day for lower taxes and smaller government at all levels.
That's why it is so vitally important for us to continue our pursuit of institutional change in government. Paramount among these reforms is scrapping the U.S. Tax Code for a better alternative. And it's time once again to consider adding a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, to keep Congress from spending beyond our means. Also, a Tax Limitation Amendment would prevent our elected representatives from raising our taxes so that they can raise their spending.
and this from NTU's site at Ballotpedia:
NTU favors the flat tax and the FairTax for the United States as opposed to the current income tax system now in use.
So maybe I've scared you, let me tell you about the Opposition to Question 1. From Ballotpedia:
The ballot question is opposed by a coalition called Vote NO Protect Our Constitution to push for a "no" vote. The coalition includes 45 organizations, 70 clergy and 900 individuals. Groups include labor, community and civil rights organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, Love Makes a Family, Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), Planned Parenthood, CT Women's Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF), Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and others. [7]
Opponents of a convention include Democratic Attorney Gen. Richard Blumenthal, Constitutional scholar Wes Horton, the League of Women Voters, CT Citizen Action Group, and State Treasurer Denise Nappier.
Please watch this video for Vote No on Question 1 for CT Constitutional Convention. For me being a young, 24 year old, CT resident this Question 1 needs to be stopped.
Thank You SO much for reading my FIRST diary!
My one wish is that I was able to report on CT's question 1 much sooner then one day before the election. Especially since i'm assuming it is under reported even in left wing circles.
